Do You Enjoy Yourself?

I sure hope you do! There’s a lot of fun to be had each day when you enjoy time with yourself. I joke and say, “‘We’ have a lot of fun in here!!” while pointing to my brain.

It wasn’t always this way. Years of work and study have taught me the importance of mindset. I can wake up, sigh and think about all the tasks I have to trudge through and feel depressed or stressed before my feet hit the floor. Or, I can wake up to daily objectives realistically laid out and count my blessings. I call that “stepping in to my day”.

When I have laid out what my week’s schedule looks like ahead of time, I spread out the objectives over 6 days and adjust according to what is on the agenda. Pencil or erasable pen help reinforce the fact that adjustments are normal and don’t require a gasp.

Once I have a loose plan in place, I have the space to intentionally enjoy parts of my day. A few months ago I challenged myself to be on the lookout for unusual details as I drive to the office (without jeopardizing safe driving). So, at stop signs I began looking in different directions to discover what else was going on. I was rewarded with beautiful colors, vegetation and fawns. Walking into stores, I intentionally looked at people’s faces and smiled. Between clients I did deep, measured breathing or reading depending on time. I felt like my days were richer for this.

The other thing I like to do is to look for the “glimmer moments” in everyday life. The song that comes on the radio with lyrics matching what you were just thinking. Hitting a series of green lights. An inspirational idea. These moments are all around us, we just need to look.

Last week I was sitting next to our 3-year-old grandchild and marveling at the way her cheeks looked as she manuevered something with her small dimpled hands. I was in awe that we have her and said “You’re real!” She lifted her head, smiled up at me and said “So are you. And so is Papa” and went back to what she was doing. A moment to keep treasuring in my heart.

I hope this inspires you to look for moments of fun or moments to treasure in your daily life.
